The Best Pizza Outside of Italy

Wow!  That is a bold promise in a headline.  But in the baseball town that San Francisco is, Tommaso’s in North Beach is a home run.

In all fairness, lets start with the bad:

Is it really, really loud?  Yes.

Is it in a sketchy neighborhood.  With strip clubs, naked people, and general weirdness?  Yes.

Do they take reservations, so you can make sure and get in?  No.

Are there long lines to get in?  Yes.

San Francisco PizzaIf you made it past the minor drawbacks listed above, you are in for a treat.  Tommaso’s wood fired pizza is the best that has cross our fighting lips.  Our selection for the night was a wonderful starter of calamari.  This is the good stuff.  Not the bottom of the fryer fare, this is the kind that is both fresh and the breading actually adds to the flavor.  Our next course was a shared Margarita pizza.  The crust has a hint of sour doughishness that reminded you that your are in the SFO.  the sause and better yet the choices of cheese made for one of the best pizzas we have ever eaten.  We highly recommend!

As described the ambiance is about as romantic as a rugby game.  It is very loud.  It is very crowded.  It is very yummie.  The prices are very affordable and well below the average for San Francisco.  It is a great value.
